Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, Belize, Late Classic period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A fine dagger knapped from grey stone with light inclusions. The dagger had a stocky handle that tapers to a point, a broad shoulder that narrows to a raised midrib, and a triangular blade with sharpened edges and a pointed tip. Daggers like this example have been found at several archaeological sites throughout southern Mesoamerica and the Caribbean, including the famous Maya site of Cuello in northern Belize and Tikal. Although they are sometimes called "daggers," they are only found in ritual deposits, and their form suggests a ceremonial purpose rather than a utilitarian tool. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 7.6" L x 1.75" W (19.3 cm x 4.4 cm)
