Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Jaina/Campeche, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 600 to 850 CE. A marvelous pottery rattle in the form of an elaborately adorned priestess boasting a trance-like expression suggestive of spiritual transformation. The sacred female wears a huge, plumed headdress, a cloak of animal hide, and a massive, intricately patterned dress, granting a sense of grandiosity and power to her figure. Her calm yet allusive countenance presents sedated eyes that appear partially closed as her fleshy lips form a gentle smile. Her resonant rattle was perhaps used as part of an ancient religious ritual. Size: 4.7" W x 7.9" H (11.9 cm x 20.1 cm); 8.3" H (21.1 cm) on included custom stand.
