Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Jaina Island, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A mold-made terracotta rattle in the form of an elite Maya lord wearing an elaborate headdress upon his long, straight coiffure, large earspools, a beaded necklace, beaded bracelets, and a fancy costume. His face is further accentuated with curvilinear whisker or tendril like shapes upon his cheeks and stippled dots on his brow. The instrument also contains several miniscule rattle balls that emit sound when shaken. Jaina Island, a small limestone island on the Yucatan Peninsula's Gulf coast, has only a tiny inlet separating it from the mainland. Jaina served as an elite Maya burial site and is notable for its fine ceramic figurines excavated around the island. Size: 3.5" L x 1.75" W x 8" H (8.9 cm x 4.4 cm x 20.3 cm)
