Description:

Pre-Columbian, eastern Mexico, Yucatan Peninsula, Jaina Island, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 600 to 850 CE. A mold-formed pottery whistle which rests upright on a pair of nubbin feet as well as a short mouthpiece on the verso. Depicted are a pair of seated figures, one with a regal visage, a meticulously-arranged coiffure, and a corded headdress with traces of powder blue pigment, and the other with an elderly countenance and exposed clavicle bones. Interestingly, both figures wear huge, identical amulets around their necks, perhaps to illustrate a familial relationship between the two. The whistle produces a nice low-tone sound when played. Size: 2.625" W x 4.9" H (6.7 cm x 12.4 cm).

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
