**First Time At Auction**

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Jaina/Campeche, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 600 to 850 CE. A mold-formed Maya Jaina terracotta figural rattle depicting the bust of a figure wearing a flared headdress with serpentine shapes and pectoral necklace. The mouth area is snout shaped, possibly representing a monkey mask. The surface retains some of the original pigments or white and classic Maya blue! The body was once filled with pebbles or pottery balls that rattled as it was carried in public processions Two sets of aligned holes on front and back of the stepped palanquin might have once had wooden stick handles inserted into them. Size: 5.5" L x 3" W x 8" H (14 cm x 7.6 cm x 20.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Pasadena, California, USA collection, ex San Francisco Bay collection acquired before 2000
