Description:

Pre-Columbian, Maya Territories, ca. 500 to 900 CE. A finely carved jadeite pendant, the stone of seafoam green hues, featuring an incised depiction of an elite lord, his visage presenting large coffee bean shaped eyes and mouth, richly ornamented with an elaborate headdress or coiffure and round earspools. As was the custom, the Mayan artisan worked with the natural shape of the stone rather than lose any precious surface area. Nice traces of red cinnabar remain in the recesses, creating a lovely contrast with the stone. Laterally perforated at the upper end for suspension, but is also lovely displayed on its stand. A gorgeous example! Size: 1.875" W x 1.875" H (4.8 cm x 4.8 cm); 4.125" H (10.5 cm) on included custom stand.
