Description:

Pre-Columbian, Maya Territories, ca. 7th to 9th century CE. A beautiful jade ear spool of a rounded form, with a flared rim and a cylindrical, hollow plug. Two perforations set close to each other could be for securing the spool in place or an attachment. Ear spools were cherished as heirlooms; the Maya associated their style and form with the earlier Olmecs, and passed them down for generations. This example is particularly striking for the attractive light green and yellow hue of the jade stone itself. Size: 1.5" Diameter x .5" H (3.8 cm x 1.3 cm)

Provenance: private Fayetteville, Arkansas, USA collection; ex-Dr. David Harner collection, Springdale, Arkansas, USA, acquired between the 1950s and 1960s
