Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Maya, Early Classic Period, ca. 250 to 550 CE. A stunning lidded pottery vessel of an important early classical Teotihuacan style, its form cylindrical and supported upon three conical feet. The exterior walls are finely incised with a narrow band of pseudoglyphs above a wide register incised with an intricately abstract mythological scene. These details contrast beautifully and really stand out from the rich dark brown ground. Finally, the dome-shaped lid is furnished with a rounded finial that was slit at the midline perhaps to attach an additional ornament. An impressive ritualistic piece. Size (body): 4.4" W x 6.5" H (11.2 cm x 16.5 cm); (w/ lid): 4.9" W x 8.875" H (12.4 cm x 22.5 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex-private T. Misenhimer collection, Beverly Hills, California, USA, collected from 1970 to 2008
