Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Classic Period, ca. 200 to 900 CE. A hand-carved greenstone maskette or pendent in the form of a snarling animal head, the lips pulled back to reveal fanged teeth with a tongue protruding, the elongated ears perked to the sides - a fierce jaguar! Animals were used to communicate beliefs and jaguars represented both terrestrial and celestial power. Maya rulers often took jaguar associated names, erected monumental stelae with related iconography, and wore pectoral carvings, such as this stone, as a sign of their power. Size: 2.125" L x 1.5" W (5.4 cm x 3.8 cm)
