Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A hand-carved greenstone pendant depicting a highly stylized anthropomorphic face of a lord, framed by a semicircular band incised with circular ear spools and a headdress band above. Drilled suspension holes are set into the edge near the upper corners, emerging from the verso, with a cut groove to access the perforations. While the composition is not precisely jadeite, the green and white veining of this rock is very similar to the coveted jade material, and just as beautiful. There is a reflective chatoyant quality and some areas glow when the pendant is backlit. As was the custom, the artisan worked with the natural shape of the stone rather than lose any precious surface area- hence the asymmetrical neckline and headdress. Size: 2" L x 1.5" W (5.1 cm x 3.8 cm)

Provenance: ex-private New York, New York, USA collection, purchased in 2011 from Joshua Wallman, who acquired them in the 1980s from Dr. Paul W. Bennett Jr.
