Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A lovely amulet of a rectangular form, hand-carved from emerald-green stone with light-green inclusions. The incised obverse face depicts a stylized squatting figure, perhaps a shaman or chief, holding bent arms and open hands to the wide chest in a gesture of prayer. Ovoid eyes, a slender nose, puffy lips, and spool-adorned ears comprise the pensive countenance, and an elaborate headdress tops the head. A biconically-drilled suspension hole through the upper periphery allows this carving to be worn as an amulet. Modern necklace cord included. Size (amulet): 1.25" W x 1.7" H (3.2 cm x 4.3 cm); size (cord): 22" L (55.9 cm).
