Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A hand-carved greenstone figure, perhaps a monkey deity, with a dramatically hunched back and arms held closely atop the chest. The bulbous head features recessed eyes, slender lips, a petite nose, and a furrowed brow, with a conical brow, and a pair of tab-shaped ears protruding off the sides. Size: 4.8" W x 6.5" H (12.2 cm x 16.5 cm)

Provenance: private Healy collection, Studio City, California, USA, acquired May 15, 2014; ex-Arte Primitivo; ex-Pine Crest School Museum, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, USA, acquired by donation between 1975 and 1982
