Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A lovely axe head of a stocky form known as a celt, carved from mottled forest-green stone with sage-green, beige, and black inclusions. The tool has a rounded butt end, a wide body, and tapered blade faces that terminate in an acutely-angled edge. The celt is a tapered hand tool of a highly-stylized ritual form with ceremonial and funerary purposes. Designed for a votive function, this is a fabulous piece of Maya artistry!
