Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Northern Campeche or Yucatan region, Maya, Late Classic period, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A hand-built pottery bowl of a wide and squat form bearing a planar base, gently swollen walls along the lower body, a lightly corseted upper body, and a thin, flared rim surrounding the deep basin. Presented in hues of cream, beige, khaki, butterscotch, and tan, the elaborate composition features a series of incised vertical grooves that surround the lower body in a gadrooned fashion. The tops of the raised bars are decorated with a black archway motif, perhaps representing human teeth, and above that is a register of black-painted crescents, perhaps suggesting animal claws, fangs, or even chili peppers. Just below the rim is a band of incised glyphs that, while untranslated, perhaps denote the bowl's owner, a dedication to a deity, or perhaps identifies the bowl's intended use. Size: 6.7" W x 4.625" H (17 cm x 11.7 cm)
