Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, El Salvador, Maya, Copador type, Classic Period, ca. 300 to 900 CE. A nice example of a hand-built pottery bowl with a shallow basin surrounded by squat, thick walls, all atop a quartet of hollow, rectangular legs that serve as petite rattles. Presented in black, red, and orange pigment atop the highly burnished, tan-hued ground, the exterior of the vessel is decorated with intricate linear and curvilinear motifs, sun-form motifs around the base of each leg, and an abstract zoomorphic head protruding from the front, perhaps representing a turtle. The basin interior is adorned with a nude, right-facing figure standing upon large feet while holding one arm to the mouth, and the figure is enclosed within concentric circles, a register of black and orange spots, and linear motifs surrounding the walls. Size: 8.875" W x 4" H (22.5 cm x 10.2 cm)
