Pre-Columbian, Central America, El Salvador, Maya, Copador type, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A hand-built pottery bowl decorated with ample orange, red, and black pigments that illustrate 3 processions of turkeys - the band within the basin consists of 10 left-facing turkeys surrounding a central knot, and the lower exterior with 11 turkeys; the upper body features 29 abstract turkeys with beaks appearing to hold aloft the rim. Turkeys were a staple of the Mayan diet, however, they also symbolized good fortune, hence these birds may have been meant for ritual or daily consumption.
