Pre-Columbian, El Salvador, Maya, Copador type, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished jar showing the Maya Hero Twins - Xbalanque and Hunahpu - as swimmers. A band of pseudo-glyphs wraps around the neck while the base is unadorned. In Maya creation mythology, the Hero Twins swam through the underworld to rescue the severed head of their father. Size: 6.3" Diameter x 5.2" H (16 cm x 13.2 cm)
