Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mayan territories, El Salvador, Copador, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A striking handbuilt polychrome vessel of an attractive form with straight walls, a corseted shoulder rising to a vertical rim, and below the iconography, a ribbed lower section that narrows to a flat base. Most likely used to store/drink the traditional cacao beverage, this vessel is extensively decorated with a wide lower register featuring four scribes seated in profile as well as a narrower register on the corseted shoulder above with pseudoglyphs, all painted in red and black against the beige ground. Scribes played a vital role in the Mayan world, and they were minor royalty, with the ability to read and write. They had the power to immortalize a king or queen through their writing, documenting battles, religious favor, and political skill. A wonderful piece, replete with a pleasing form and meaningful iconography. Size: 5.75" in diameter at widest point x 3.75" H (14.6 cm x 9.5 cm)
