Description:

Pre-Columbian, Guatemala and southern Mexico, Maya, Late Classic Period, ca. 700 to 900 CE. A gorgeous polychrome Copador bowl with painted motifs on the interior and exterior. The bowl features a round but stable base which has been flattened at its bottom with angular low relief incisions spiraling along the lower register. The bowl's walls are vertical, and the rim is very slightly flared. A painted exterior program includes a warrior figure with red lips and red paint across his body, appearing as if he were writing symbols on a wall. This figure is juxtaposed with esoteric symbols to either side - this composition being repeated three times across its horizontal plane. The interior basin includes five identical abstract figures encircling a central ring split into four planes with red dots placed in each quadrant. Size: 8.75" W x 3.5" H (22.2 cm x 8.9 cm)
