Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central America, El Salvador, Maya, Copador type, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished pottery bowl decorated with black and red pigment atop a light orange ground. Within the basin is a procession of 4 stylized turkeys, each with a branch or stem held in its red-painted beak. The turkeys surround a circular panel within the center of the basin. Around the exterior are 8 right-facing figures, each holding their hands out perhaps in a gesture of offering. Turkeys were a staple of the Mayan diet; however, they also symbolized good fortune; hence these birds may have been meant for ritual or daily consumption. Size: 7.8" L x 8.1" W x 3.75" H (19.8 cm x 20.6 cm x 9.5 cm)
