Description:

Pre-Columbian, El Salvador, Maya, Copador, Late Classic Period, ca. 550 to 900 CE. A remarkable pottery bowl elaborately hand-painted with the Maya Hero Twins - Xbalanque and Hunahpu - as swimmers below a band of pseudo-glyphs on the exterior, while additional glyph-like and geometric decoration embellishes the interior. In Maya creation mythology, the Hero Twins swam through the underworld to rescue the severed head of their father. Note the remains of white stucco and natural mica deposits that add further dimension to the already-intricate surface. A vibrant example, meticulously decorated and rich with Maya mythological iconography! Size: 5.6" Diameter x 2.6" H (14.2 cm x 6.6 cm)
