Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico and northern Central America, Mayan Territories, Early Pre-Classic, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. A striking greyware head of an elite lord or noble that forms a vessel with a round mouth and with an unpronounced rim at the top of the head. The figure has huge, sunken round eyes, a very dramatic nose that is accentuated by sharply-defined eyebrows, and very high cheekbones with sunken jowls that give the impression of great age. He wears interesting earrings made from applied rings and pendants that are shaped like flying birds. He also has an incised hairline with a banded headdress with two rectangular projections. Mayan pottery from the pre-Classic period is rare. Size: 3.75" W x 6" H (9.5 cm x 15.2 cm)
