Maya Culture, Maya Heartland, Classic Period, ca. 300 - 900 CE. A ceramic rattle with four sculpted cacao beans around the base of the rattle, and a small ceramic pellet bell with a face on the handle. Strong remains of polychrome on the rattle. The rattle is an elegant and important example. The cacao beans suggest that it was used in rituals, as cacao was an important beverage imbibed during ceremonies by the Maya elite. 8" H.
