Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico to Guatemala, Maya, Classic Period, ca. 250 to 500 CE. A beautiful jade pendant set in a modern sterling silver bezel setting and strung on a cord as a wearable necklace. The jade is a fragment from a larger plaque depicting a lord or deity facing forward wearing earspools and a necklace, delineated by string cut and polishing techniques; the piece includes the nose and chin, and upper right arm and hands. The arm is bent with fingers held up to the chest slightly curved like "crab claws," perhaps a ceremonial gesture. Jade was revered by the Maya not only for its beauty, but also because it had spiritual power - it was believed to be the embodiment of the wind and the "breath" that formed the Maya soul. The cord is choker length but could be replaced with a chain and is fully wearable as is. Size of pendant: 1.8" L x 1.6" W (4.6 cm x 4.1 cm); cord: 15.75" L (40 cm); silver quality: 93%
