Description:

Pre-Columbian, Guatemala, Classic Period, Maya, ca. 250 to 900 CE. Finely carved from basalt, the head of a baby goat with petite horns; long drooping ears with incised scroll motifs along the lower ends as well as deeply drilled holes at the upper ends; skillfully carved expressive eyes that are pointed at the outer ends, nicely modeled, and delineated with deep pupils; a protruding muzzle presenting the goat’s nose, mouth, and revealed upper teeth; a wonderful decorative tassel adorning the top of the goat’s head that ends in two scrolled terminals over the forehead. On the back is a rectangular mortise, perhaps for mounting to a wall. Size: 8" L x 4.375" W x 5.5" H (20.3 cm x 11.1 cm x 14 cm); 8.375" H (21.3 cm) on included custom stand.
