Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico or Guatemala, Maya culture, Late Classic period, ca. 6th to 9th century CE. A fascinating andesite pendant in the form of a squatting lord in supplication, adorned with a flat headdress and prominent earspools as he places hands together. The low-relief figure is created from a series of shallow lines, giving it a more abstract appearance than much similar Maya art. The value of greenstones like andesite for ancient Mesoamericans lay in its symbolic power: its color was associated with water and vegetation, and the renewal of the agricultural cycle. It was also believed to be the embodiment of the wind and the "breath" that formed the Maya soul.Size: 2.4" W x 1.8" H (6.1 cm x 4.6 cm)
