Description:

Central Asia, Tibet, ca. mid to late 20th century CE. This striking pair of guardian lions, crafted from multiple brass pieces with wings, applied tails, and tongues, is typically displayed flanking entrances to ward off evil. When represented as a symmetrical pair the male is on the left and the female on the right - the genitalia of both is delineated on the underside of this pair. The Snow Lion is a celestial animal and emblem of Tibet, that represents the snowy mountain ranges as well as fearlessness and dominance. Its roar represents the sound of emptiness, truth, and the Buddha's teachings. Snow Lions are featured in Buddhist art, often supporting Buddha’s throne, and appear on the Tibetan flag.
