Description:

Roman, late Imperial Period, ca. late 3rd to early 5th century CE. A set of matching free-blown jars formed from semi-translucent, pale yellow-green glass. Each vessel is defined by a concave base with a rough pontil scar, a piriform body with a rounded shoulder and a corseted neck line, a funnel-form neck with an out-folded rib, and a short rim with a smooth lip. Though covered in thick encrustations, beautiful layers of silvery and rainbow-hued iridescence nicely complement the jars' soft spring hues. Size of each (both are relatively similar): 2.5" W x 4.875" H (6.4 cm x 12.4 cm).

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection; ex-Artemis Gallery; ex-Arte Primitivo Gallery, New York, New York, USA; ex-Khader M. Baidun & Sons, Jerusalem, Israel

  • Condition: Both vessels have light abrasions across bodies, necks, and bases, with thick encrustations, and light weathering film, otherwise intact and very good. The rough pontil scars indicate these items were free-blown. Nice earthen deposits as well as great silver and rainbow iridescence throughout.
