Pre-Columbian, Peru, Central Coast, Chancay, ca. 1000 to 1470 CE. An endearing couple comprised of slip painted earthenware, each mold made from two pieces and hand painted in hues of chocolate brown and white on buff terracotta. A matching pair, aside from the genitalia, both share similar characteristics including enlarged heads with boldly delineated features and nearly the same wide-eyed, open-mouthed expression,identical positioning of the arms, the same necklaces, and similar grand headdresses, only the female's shows ear-like forms emerging from either side and the male's presents three perforated points on top. Male-female pairs of painted terracotta figurines have been uncovered from Chancay graves challenging the more accepted notion of strictly female companionship into the next world. Size: male measures 3.25" W x 6.75" H (8.3 cm x 17.1 cm); together both measure 7.5" H x 8.875"W (19.1 x 22.5 cm) on stand
