Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Chancay culture, ca. 1000 to 1470 CE. A charming matched pair of hollow ceramic figures with almost identical bodies and features aside from their obvious genitalia. Both stand with their wide, paddle-like hands thrown out to the sides as if looking for a high five. Their faces are stylized, with big eyes and dramatic facial paint on their cheeks and from their eyes to the their temples. Both wear headdresses and seem to have flattened, widened skulls. Drilled holes on the headdresses and earlobes indicate where the figures may have had gold or feather ornaments. Pottery from the Chancay culture is often found in the cemeteries of the Ancon and Chancay valleys; the Chancay produced large quantities of funerary ceramics in specialized workshops. These figures are often placed in male and female pairs, perhaps as guardians of tombs. Size of one (they are very similar in size): 5.75" W x 7.2" H (14.6 cm x 18.3 cm); 8.95" H (22.7 cm) on included custom stand.
