Description:

Cristina Acosta (Mata Ortiz, 21st century). Polychrome wedding vase, ca. 21st century CE. Signed "Cristina Acosta" on underside of base. A wonderful pottery wedding vase comprised of a voluminous body surmounted by 2 flared spouts connected by a bridge handle, all sitting upon a narrow base. The entirety of the vessel is enveloped in creamy, beige-hued slip with intricately painted geometric and abstract designs in colors of russet and black. Cristina Acosta is from a talented family of potters. She is from the village of Mata Ortiz in northern Mexico and learned the art with the Loya family under the tutelage of the masters. Her art is made by the coil method with the local white clay and her usual style and talent is in making thin-walled pots with delicate and intricate sweeping Paquime designs. Many of her pieces also illustrate the skill of painting an intricate checkerboard pattern in black and terracotta. Size: 6.9" Diameter x 8.3" H (17.5 cm x 21.1 cm)
