Description:

Maria de Los Angeles "Angela" Corona Guillen (Mata Ortiz, b. 1983). Pottery jar with butterflies, n.d. Signed on underside of base. A wonderful pottery jar incised and painted with designs of butterflies and flowers atop a fish-scale motif ground. The vessel presents a graceful form with a wide hip, a dramatic sloped shoulder, an attenuated neck, and a flared rim, all supported by a round yet stable base. Maria de Los Angeles (Angela) Corona Guillen is a potter from the village of Mata Ortiz in northern Mexico. Hailing from a well-known family of Mata Ortiz potters, Angela began potting at 15, her primary teacher being her grandfather, Guadalupe Corona. She typically forms and paints her own work, but she buys her paint from others and uses an electric kiln to fire her pieces in, a contrast from the traditional Mata Ortiz pottery which is fired in the ground, without a wheel. Angela favors the sgraffito technique, and her favorite subjects are animals - both of which are seen in this example. Size: 6.5" Diameter x 6.5" H (16.5 cm x 16.5 cm)
