Description:

Jose Quezada Talamontes (Mata Ortiz, 20th to 21st century). Black-on-black jar with zoomorph, n.d. Signed on underside of base. An impressive pottery jar fired to a lustrous black sheen with abstract matte decoration of geometric and palm motifs adorning the sloped shoulder, while the stylized head of a zoomorph rises from the narrow rim. Resembling a bird, the fascinating creature gazes forth from petite eyes surrounded by incised dashes representing fur or feathers as a long beak extends below and a pair of horns project from the top of the head. The vessel itself sits upon a round yet stable base; its profile dominated by the wide-spanning hip. Size: 7" Diameter x 5.8" H (17.8 cm x 14.7 cm)
