Description:

Jaime Quezada Celado (Mexican, Mata Ortiz, 20th century). Blackware pottery owl jar. Signed "Jaime Quezada C" on underside of base. A charming blackware jar in the adorable form of a seated owl by Jaime Quezada Celado, the nephew of the famed Nicholas Quezada who is credited with founding Mata Ortiz style pottery. The bulbous bird sits on a narrowed base with wings peeking out from both sides, while his horned head opens to the hollow interior of the vessel. Petite, annular eyes flank his pointed beak which projects froth from a head incised with triangles representing feathers. His body features lustrous and matte black glaze designs of abstract geometric, floral, and sunburst motifs. Size: 7.9" Diameter x 9.6" H (20.1 cm x 24.4 cm); 9.9" H (25.1 cm) on included custom stand.

Mata Ortiz pottery is a recreation of the Mogollon pottery found in and around the archeological site of Casas Grandes (Paquime) in the Mexican state of Chihuahua. Named after the modern town of Mata Ortiz, which is near the archeological site, the style was propagated by Juan Quezada Celado. Quezada learned on his own to recreate this ancient pottery and then went on to update it.
