Description:

Eduardo Ortiz (Mata Ortiz, d. 2011). Blackware jar, n.d. Signed on underside of base. A gorgeous pottery jar by the renowned Mata Ortiz artist Eduardo Ortiz, fired to a lustrous, black sheen with abstract, matte decoration of starburst, meander, floral, zigzag, and geometric motifs. The elegant vessel presents a fascinating form with a narrow base that expands to 4 concave walls with a rounded shoulder, a tapered neck, and a flared rim. Eduardo "Chevo" Ortiz Estrada was a potter from the village of Mata Ortiz. Working with his wife, Hortencia Dominguez de Ortiz, he produced mostly graphite blackware, although they also produced a lot of polychrome early in their careers. Chevo formed the jars and painted the basic designs while Hortencia polished, sanded and filled in the decoration lines. When they were ready, Eduardo would ground fire them the ancient way. Size: 8.3" Diameter x 8" H (21.1 cm x 20.3 cm)
