Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Valdivian culture, ca. 2300 to 2000 BCE. A massive stone axe head, expertly carved from a beautiful greenstone with two lateral protrusions on the sides at the top. This ceremonial piece features a rounded blade and slightly incurved sides. The surface is delightfully smooth in texture; formed over many hours using painstaking techniques by master artisans. The stone has lovely swirling green and gray veins with shimmering mica deposits. Hand axes like this one, although shaped like utilitarian tools, were made specifically for ritual purposes and symbolized the power of the bearer. They were often incorporated in burials and laid to rest with the deceased. Size: 13" L x 8.5" W (33 cm x 21.6 cm); 16" H (40.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York City, New York, USA collection; ex-J. H. collection, New York City, New York, USA, before 2000
