Description:

Native American, Midwestern United States, Indiana, Morgan County, Eastern Woodland, Archaic period, ca. 5000 to 3000 BCE. A massive double bitted, full groove axe head pecked from a mica-rich gray stone. The axe has a deep groove encircling the entire circumference of the head, hence the type "full groove" axe, which enabled the stone to be hafted to a wooden pole with cords. The wider end has chips and nicks to the tapered blade edge suggestive of use. However, this hefty head must have required great strength to wield as tool, and may have only served a ceremonial function as the mottled stone is inherently beautiful with the shimmering mica flecks! Size: 10" L x 6.5" W (25.4 cm x 16.5 cm)
