Description:

Luristan, modern day northern Iran, ca. 1000 to 600 BCE. This is a large, beautiful piece at a very low price! This is a cast heavy bronze spearhead with a thick rib and a flared design at the top of the blade. The bluish patina indicates a higher percentage of tin in the alloy; this strengthens the blade. Bronze Age Luristan art was the work of nomadic herdsmen and horsemen who crafted small, portable objects, including daggers, swords, and other weapons. Weapons like these would almost certainly have been entombed in the small rock graves in which their owners were buried; this piece is in the style of those found at Marlik, in modern day Mazandaran Province, the site of a royal cemetery. Although few human remains have been found (probably due to natural processes of decay), those that have been are laid on their side, surrounded by rich grave goods. Size: 17.1" L x 1.65" W (43.4 cm x 4.2 cm)

Provenance: Ex-Estate of John Piscopo. Mr. Piscopo was one of the largest collectors of ancient weapons in the US with a collection that spanned all cultures, all ages.
