Description:

Mark Daily (American, b. 1946). "Floral Arrangement in Blue Vase" oil on board, n.d. Signed "M.D." at lower right. A wonderful still life by American artist Mark Daily depicting a blue vase on a table top beside a meandering floral vine as well a s a planter and perhaps papers and books, arranged somewhat chaotically and rendered in loose, liberal strokes and bright shades of cobalt, spring green, viridian, and scarlet, all nicely complemented by the neutral hues of the ground. An exceptional colorist, Daily strategically places each hue within the context of others to maximize their impact. In addition, his exceptional command of light draws our attention to the striking vase and sinuous tendrils. Size of painting: 3.5" W x 4" H (8.9 cm x 10.2 cm); of frame: 12.25" W x 15.25" H (31.1 cm x 38.7 cm)

Born in Chicago, Mark Daily studied at the American Academy of Art in Chicago, but it wasn't until he discovered Nicolai Fechin's paintings and decided to move west to Taos, New Mexico that his artistic style truly took hold. Daily lived in Taos for 9 years, was inspired by the Taos Society of Artists as well as the undeniable beauty of New Mexico. He formed a strong community with fellow Taos artists Ned Jacob, William Sharer, and Buffalo Kaplinski. This group first showed in Taos and then moved to Denver where they became known as the Denver School. As Daily recalls, "we painted, partied, traveled, and showed together…it was rare to find an art group as large as ours and with our degree of interaction."
