Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru (Ecuador border), Chavin Maranon, 1500 BCE. A fantastic pottery vessel surmounted by a pair of zoomorphic figures, perhaps coatimundi, who emit a high-pitched whistle when one blows into the spout, as though playing an instrument or singing. Embellished by orange, gray, and white slip, the ancient vessel features a bowl shaped bottom, a projecting shoulder edge, a gently sloped shoulder, and a conical spout with a ribbon-form strap handle leading to the musical creatures. Abstract, geometric designs decorate the exterior, while each coatimundi displays large eyes, raised ears, open mouths, and pointed snouts on which they place both paws. Size: 9.5" Diameter x 7.3" H (24.1 cm x 18.5 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, before 2010; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, acquired in the 1950s to 1960s
