Pre-Columbian, Brazil, Lower Amazon Basin, Marajo Island, Marajoara culture, ca. 800 to 1400 CE. A hand-built pottery bowl of a spherical form with a slightly concave base, rounded walls, a thick rim decorated with a pair of integral avian handles, and a deep basin. The orange-red-slipped vessel is decorated with repeating incised registers of serrated teeth on the upper body as well as two large panels depicting abstract anthropomorphic deities on the lower body. An attractive example of fine Marajao artistry! Size: 6.25" W x 4.9" H (15.9 cm x 12.4 cm)

Minor abrasions to base, body, bird handles, and rim, with fading to areas of original pigmentation, and light softening to some incised details. Light earthen deposits and traces of original pigment throughout.
