Description:

Pre-Columbian, Brazil, Marajoara culture, ca. 800 to 1400 CE. A beautifully incised and painted bowl whose exterior depicts incised abstract mask-like faces in a symmetrical form. The interior is painted with red on cream, divided into quadrants, each featuring a mound-like motif with what appears to be paths leading into them. The Marajoara - also known as the Marajo - flourished on Marajo Island, in the mouth of the Amazon River. They built impressive mounds and lived subsistence lifestyles while producing stylistically-unique, beautiful pottery like this. Size: 4.9" W x 5" H (12.4 cm x 12.7 cm); 10.6" H (26.9 cm) on included custom stand.
