Description:

Pre-Columbian, northern Chile, Mapuche people, ca. 1500 CE. A handsome pipe carved from a single piece of dark volcanic stone, with a smooth surface and a short mouth that would have probably had bone or some other item fitted over it to extend it. The chamber is at one end of the pipe, with a thin, raised rim. Pipes like this one seem to have been common gifts given between different cultural groups throughout ancient Chile, and styles made in different regions have been found far from their origins. Size: 2.55" W x 0.7" H (6.5 cm x 1.8 cm)

Provenance: ex-private Bettina Schwimmer collection, Chicago, Illinois, USA, collected from 1955-2006
