Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manteno culture, ca. 1100 to 1300 CE. A wonderful pottery head of an elder wearing a bulbous headdress. Lined with deep wrinkles, his visage presents squinting eyes, a long nose, a gentle smile, and a pointed beard, all flanked by a pair of ears with several piercings. His headdress is adorned with applied ornaments of a relief monkey head and a zigzag strip with bird heads at each end. An inscription on the vero suggest this is the head of an elder priest or chief. Size: 4.9" L x 4" W x 4.6" H (12.4 cm x 10.2 cm x 11.7 cm); 9.2" H (23.4 cm) on included custom stand.
