Pre-Columbian, Eastern Ecuador, Manteno, ca. 1000 to 1534 CE. An impressive blackware vessel created by the Manteno culture of ancient Ecuador depicting a human figure seated with hands placed upon upraised knees, his stylized face modeled with a pronounced nose, incised eyes and mouth, and large earspools. He wears a very large domed headdress is of an exaggerated bulbous mushroom-shaped form. The lower chamber is decorated with a vertical striated pattern around the middle and a magnificent incised, eight-pointed netted star design on the underside. A special example of an unusual form from this Pre-Columbian culture of coastal Ecuador. Size: 7.25" W x 8.5" H (18.4 cm x 21.6 cm)
