Description:

Pre-Columbian, northern Colombia, Malambo culture, ca. 1000 BCE to 100 CE. A hand-built pottery ceremonial dish of an interesting form bearing a broad, rectangular body resting atop four nubbin feet, a shallow basin surrounded by an overhanging rim, fin-like elements protruding from each corner, and a pair of abstract zoomorphic heads on the sides that double as handles. The front and back of the body are decorated with two highly abstract anthropomorphic heads that extend outward with broad necks, each bearing incised motifs and applied cinnabar pigment, and the front head exhibits a pair of nodule-shaped 'eyes' on top.   • Condition: Professionally repaired from multiple pieces, with restoration to some areas of body, and resurfacing and overpainting along new material and break lines. Abrasions and minor nicks to legs, base, body, and heads, with light fading to red cinnabar, softening to some incised details, and light encrustations. Light earthen deposits throughout, and nice traces of original cinnabar in some incised details.
