Description:

Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, Manabi culture, ca. 500 BCE and 500 CE. A delicate collection of ceramic spindle whorls transformed into a modern necklace with modern wine red macrame and a clasp made from a large spindle whorl. Most of the spindle whorls have incised artwork depicting birds, especially pelicans. Spindle whorls were not just utilitarian items in the pre-Columbian world. Beautiful textiles were an important element of elite and ceremonial costume, and the importance of whorls as tools to create them seems to have been recognized in ritual deposits. These were not objects to be discarded, but rather elevated with veneration. Size of largest whorl: 0.6" W (1.5 cm); length of strand: 18" L (45.7 cm)

Provenance: ex-Hank Johnson collection, HDEnterprise, before 1995
