Description:

M.E. Riley (American?, 19th century). Portrait of an Old Testament Prophet, chalk and crayon on paper, 1884. Signed with date at lower right. A dramatic drawing of an old man, likely a prophet from the Old Testament of the Bible, rendered in chalk and crayon on paper by artist M.E. Riley. Draped in a large hood, the bearded figure clasps his hands together in prayer and turns his head to his left, displaying a stern visage with a heavy, wrinkled brow, sunken, upward-gazing eyes, a pointed nose, and gaunt cheeks flanking a down-turned mouth. Strokes of silvery white highlight his long, bushy beard, tonsured coiffure, furrowed brow, and upper arms, nicely contrasting the dark shadows of the background. Size of drawing: 13" W x 16" H (33 cm x 40.6 cm); frame: 18.9" W x 21.6" H (48 cm x 54.9 cm)
