Description:

Near East, Iran, Luristan / Marlik, ca. 1000 to 600 BCE. A striking stone elongated mace head with a hole through the middle. Weapons like these would almost certainly have been entombed in the small rock graves in which their owners were buried; this piece is in the style of those found at Marlik, in modern day Mazandaran Province, the site of a royal cemetery. Although few human remains have been found (probably due to natural processes of decay), those that have been are laid on their side, surrounded by rich grave goods. Size: 1.9" Diameter x 2.8" H (4.8 cm x 7.1 cm)

Provenance: private Everett, Massachusetts, USA collection, purchased from Artemis Gallery, April 22, 2016; ex-K. Dorney collection
