Description:

Ancient Near East, Northwestern Iran, Luristan, ca. 1000 to 600 BCE. A finely cast leaded-bronze figurine of an ibex, standing on four delineated legs. The stylized animal has high, back-curving horns, protruding ears, and a short tail. The neck is perforated through the center, perhaps for suspension as an amulet. The ibex was a sacred figure associated with fertility and virility. This is a fine example that demonstrates the skill of Luristan's bronzesmiths, and has developed a rich patina. Size: 1.25" L x 1.25" H (3.2 cm x 3.2 cm)

Provenance: ex-estate of Eldert Bontekoe, Pegasi Numismatics, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA acquired before 2000
